Sealant
A sealant is a white protective coating that is painted into the pits and fissures of the molars and sometimes premolars to help prevent cavities. A sealant acts as a barrier to food, plaque and acid. It helps protect from decay in the deep grooves, and helps to maintain a surface that is easy to clean.
Remember! Sealants are NOT a substitute for brushing, they are just meant as a preventive aid, to make it easier to keep those molars clean!
Composite Resin Restoration
A composite resin restoration is a tooth-colored material that is used to replace the area where decay has been removed.
Stainless Steel Crown
Prefabricated silver crown or cap that covers all surfaces of the tooth – used for primary molars.
Stainless Steel Crown with Resin Facing
Prefabricated silver crown, or cap with a tooth colored facing – used for front teeth.
Pulpotomy
The pulp of a tooth is the inner, central core of the tooth. The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, connective tissue and reparative cells. A pulpotomy helps to maintain the vitality of a tooth while removing a portion of the pulp tissue that has been affected by decay. A tooth that has had a pulpotomy generally requires a final restoration of a stainless steel crown (for molars) or a stainless steel crown with a resin facing (for front teeth).
Pulpectomy
Complete removal of the pulp tissue from the tooth. It is similar to a root canal in permanent teeth. A pulpectomy is often done due to a large cavity OR trauma to the tooth. It helps to maintain the vitality of the tooth. A tooth that has had a pulpectomy generally requires a final restoration of a stainless steel crown (for molars) or a stainless steel crown with a resin facing (for front teeth).
Extraction
An extraction is the removal of a tooth. It is possible treatment for an unrestorable or grossly decayed tooth. It is also done as a sequelae to dental trauma (injury), when the integrity of the permanent tooth (or developing tooth bud) is at risk.
Abscess
An abscess is an infection of a tooth that had spread to the surrounding tissues.
Ectopic Tooth
An ectopic tooth is a malpositioned tooth. It is usually either partially erupted, or un-erupted.
Space Maintainer
